The 2011 Irish Baseball League Championships were amongst the most exciting in the leagues history with both the A & B league finals going to a 3rd game.
A LEAGUE FINAL
Game 1...
..
was a brilliant pitcher's duel, with the Hurricanes taking a slim 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With one out and nobody on base, the Spartans used patience, a balk and clutch hitting to even the score. The Spartans then won in dramatic fashion by scoring the decisive run when the Hurricanes botched a rundown between third base and home to allow John Dillon to score. Final Spartans 3, Hurricanes 2.
Game 2...
..
went to the Hurricanes in a well-played contest. The Spartans took an early 2 run lead when Jimmy Pita and Alan Fox scored. The Hurricanes instantly battled back with a leadoff triple from Tom Kelley. They overcame this early Spartans lead with solid defense and timely hitting winning out by a score of 5-3, setting the stage for the rubber game the following weekend.
Game 3 was a Baseball Ireland classic. The Hurrcianes took the lead twice before being pegged back by the Spartans in the bottom of each inning. The Spartans went ahead in the 6th inning for the 1st time in the game when Andre slid home under the tag. Stephen Carter then scored on a past ball for the insurance run. The Hurricanes were unable to bounce back with any base runners so the Spartans won their 6th title in a row and 10th overall.
Final Score:
Spartans 4, Hurricanes 2.

B LEAGUE FINAL
Game 1 of the Black Sox v Mariners was a tough hard fought match by both teams; the Mariners getting an early lead and holding it through to the 7th inning. Strong pitching from Glen Poor and Jack Farrell throughout the whole match kept the scores close. Bottom of the 7th the Black Sox were down a run and down to their last out with the bases loaded; Jose Gomez rips a gap line drive to left center for a 2 run double to secure the win.
Final score Black Sox 5 Mariners 4.
With Game 2 rained out, it was rescheduled for the following Sat Oct 1; severe weather on the day meant the match was postponed to the 2nd Oct. Severe delays in starting the match meant Game 2 was a disputed walkover awarded against the Black Sox. With time ticking down towards the regulation start time for game 3, now the decider; the Black Sox were able to field a team with bare minutes to spare.
The Mariners got off to a strong start and held a lead of 6-2 through 6 innings. Leo Farrell pitched strong for the whole match to help keep the lead for the Mariners. Bottom of the 6th saw the Black Sox come from behind to tie the match up 6-6. Only for the Mariners to answer back with 2 runs in the top of the 7th. Bottom of the 7th the Black Sox were able to counter back with 2 runs to keep the game going into extra innings at 8-8. The Mariners strong hitting and aggressive base running displayed throughout the season once again helped give them 1 more run in the top of the 8th. A thrilling bottom of the 8th ensued with two runners on and Brian “Boomer” Connolly hits a 2 run double to have Jose Gomez again come up big, this time scoring the winning run from second. Again strong pitching from Glen Poor through 6 innings helped keep the Black Sox in the game and patience from all on offense gave the Black Sox enough chances to win the rubber match in a thrilling 8 inning contest. Well done to the Mariners for making it an exciting & challenging final.
Final score Black Sox 10 Mariners 9 and 2 to 1 for the series.
The Black Sox would like to thank Jose Gomez for his outstanding contribution throughout the season and in the Finals, and wish him well on his return back to Venezuela, he will be sorely missed by all in the club and in the league.
